Your guide to Network Marketing, also known as MLM
HOW DOES IT WORK?
In all sectors of industry, there is jargon. Multi-level marketing is no exception, and to use MLM terms without explanation could lead to confusion. Here is a general guide to one of the ways multi-level marketing works, with definitions of words or terms
To become a distributor, you have to be sponsored. (A sponsor is the person who introduces you to the company).
Your sponsor is your mentor. It is in their interest, as well as yours, to provide you with information and support on how best to promote your business. They will probably advise you to purchase a starter pack. (A starter pack contains information and in some cases samples of products available). How comprehensive these kits are, and what they cost, will vary from company to company).
Despite the support of your 'upline' (your upline is your sponsor and the person who sponsored them and so on), you are an independent distributor, and as such you are running your own business. The time and effort you put into the enterprise will determine how much you get out of it.
As a distributor you are now in the position to become a sponsor yourself and create your own 'downline'. (Your downline are the people you sponsor and subsequently the people they sponsor. Hence the term 'multi-level'. You, in turn, will now be part of their upline).
As an independent distributor, with your own downline, you will be earning bonuses or percentages based on your own sales together with the sales of your downline. The actual figures are worked out according to your company's 'compensation plan' or 'marketing plan', which may include other incentives in the form of cars and holidays. (Compensation and marketing plans are the formula used to calculate how much you and your downline have earned. There are many variations of this because every company has its own plan).
